Next year (2010) MEDITECH will introduce C/S 6.1 (or whatever they’re calling it by then) at Interior Health in western Canada. One of the advantages of waiting for 6.1 is that more modules will be written in FOCUS and hence not need to be converted from C/S to FOCUS in the future. Among the items to be reprogrammed in FOCUS in 6.1 will be the Billing and Accounts Receivable module (BAR). Let’s just say that BAR is not the most heavily used module in Canada so you have to wonder why did MEDITECH select Interior Health as their first 6.1 site?
What you have to conclude from this is that one reason they may have chosen this site is because if BAR had problems, that it wouldn’t cause the hospital a major problem. Many of you may remember that the first C/S site was in northeast New Brunswick which I confirmed after many years of speculation was chosen for its remoteness. If something went wrong, less people would know about it.
Is the same strategy being used here? If so, this implies that MEDITECH will need additional 6.1 test sites in the US before a general release. Several 6.1 beta sites might take another year or so to bring live and debug implying that 6.1 wouldn’t be available for general release until late 2011 or 2012. This of course assumes that the report writer issue is resolved. But that’s a topic for another day.
Has anyone else tried to sign up for 6.1?
