“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” (Confucius, 551 BC) and in the MEDITECH world that first step is taken into the MIS Database.
The MIS Database in 6.x has undergone quite a bit of a redesign. Current MAGIC customers especially will find that 6.x has some new dictionary routines that can make building new users quicker and more efficient.
The first step in the new process is to create a user profile in the ‘Person Profile’ dictionary. This new dictionary enables the analyst to create a profile for groups of users who require the same access. I used to do this by creating a ‘Generic User’ – and then I would copy the ‘Generic User’s’ access when I was building new users. The ‘Person Profile’ offers an advantage over my method in that, when the Profile is edited, it does a mass edit of existing users with that profile. Existing users can also be moved in and out of profiles easily within that dictionary by adding or removing the user name. Creating a profile is optional; you can still build users individually.
The Profile Dictionary also enables the analyst to assign access to routines that have historically been scattered in other areas of MIS or in other modules. Permission fields that provide access to enabling E-Sign capability, co-sign for medication administration and verifying capability within the Transfusion Administration Record are now more conveniently located together in MIS in 6.x. After years of managing users in the MAGIC world where adding one application to 100 users could turn into hours of work, the Profile Dictionary will be a welcome addition.
